Setting it up has been a bit of a hassle without a proper HDMI monitor. The Mini is a great workhorse when I can use it need it (feels great to just let it run during data ingestion without having to worry about thermal constraints). feeling like I am able to reach the stuttering point too quickly with my normal usage. Still running into the beach ball for image heavy PDFs, large excel files, etc. Great on the plane in economy seating and day to day use (especially when simultaneously carrying my company Thinkpad).

Pros: The Air’s form factor is hard to give up. I also don’t have a monitor or designated seating area in these offices, and generally have to switch meeting rooms fairly frequently. As a result I’ve used the mini fairly sparingly since I got it in May. My previous external monitor was USB-C only and didn’t play very well as the sole monitor for the Mac Mini - it normally doesn’t recognize the monitor til after I login, so often I’m trying to login blindly or have to have it connected to another HDMI display first. Spend 90% of the time abroad on-site at offices or on the road/plane.

I would love to get opinions from people.Įdit: Gave both the Mac Mini and Macbook Pro a shot and decided on the Mac Mini. While it's nice to think about the convenience of the Macbook Pro 16", especially with all the great reviews it got, I would need good reasons to justify the extra $1200 in cost.

It's a bit awkward to setup the Mac Mini with the portable monitor, and I feel self-conscious doing so, but it's honestly as simple as plugging in the Mac Mini to a power supply and connecting a USB-C cord between the Mini and the monitor, so 1-2 minutes tops. I also think I overestimated my need for portability. I don't want to make a mistake like I did with my 2018 Macbook Air and purchase a device that didn't quite meet my requirements but that I thought was a good deal (got for $1100 all-in at release). Macbook Pro 16" (2019): six-core i7 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSDĪnother deal I found that doesn't hit the RAM requirement: I purchased this and have 2 weeks to return. Mac Mini (2018): six-core i5 3.0GHz, 8GB RAM upgradable, 256GB SSDĬost with portable monitor and 16GB RAM upgrade: ~ $1200 all-in (Microcenter) Here are the two devices I've considered: Basically, I need space to store my data and results, a processor to handle heavy computations, and enough RAM to load data in-memory.

Ideally, I would like at least 256GB SSD, a quad-core processor, and 16GB RAM (or an ability to upgrade RAM as in the Mac Mini). I have a 2018 Macbook Air 128GB SSD, dual-core i5 1.6GHz, 8GB RAM that I'm selling since I'm constantly running out of space and experience performance issues when computing.

However, I have heavy computational demands and need to run programs locally that I can't necessarily run on computing clusters or when I need to work offline. I generally use my iPad for browsing, reading documents, taking notes, etc. I most often work from home (where my desktop is) but occasionally need to work on campus or work while traveling out of town, hence the need for a secondary computer.

I need a mobile solution to complement my desktop for when I'm away. This may be an unorthodox use case, but my primary computer is my gaming desktop which is pretty hefty.
